We are almost a month on from Stuart Armstrong stating he was looking forward to his new contract at Celtic, and it has still to materialise.

Now we have rumours Southampton are preparing a £10million bid.

One thing I know about Stuart is he is a very level-headed and intelligent man. I think he will be assessing his personal situation at the moment.

Let’s not forget not that long ago he was a reserve player at Celtic. Even a year ago Brendan Rodgers hadn’t made up his mind about him. He’s flourished ever since.

I can remember watching Stuart in a Dundee United shirt back in the early days of his career and thinking he really could go to a very high level. Without doubt he's well on the way to that.

It's only natural clubs like Southampton are sniffing around. Southampton are usually the ones that understand a player’s value the most. A big part of that is down to the fact they have their Scottish recruitment head Ross Wilson who knows his stuff.

All players have their eyes on the Premier League in England. It’s an undeniable carrot just to the south of where we are.

Stuart will also know he’s on to a good number at Celtic. Brendan has improved him and his gut will tell him to keep working him for at least an other year.

I think some day he will go to England. Most would feel that’s likely, and who could deny him that?

I’m often critical of players going to the Championship, but his sights will be higher set higher than that, there is no doubt about it.

As a Scottish football fan, let's hope it's not for some time yet.
