The day was saved for hundreds of punk punters yesterday after they were left in the lurch following the last-minute cancellation of Green Day at Bellahouston Park.

As reported by the Evening Times shortly after the shock announcement, bars and venues across the city came together to soften the blow for gutted rock fans as they opened their doors with offers and impromptu Green Day-themed parties.

American beer company Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) was quick to fly in Green Date, one of the country’s top Green Day tribute bands, for a show at Saint Luke’s in the east end of the city.

Having rushed up almost 270 miles from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, Green Date banged out the classics at the Bain Street venue which was packed with punks who partied the night away at the free event.

Shortly after the gig, the Green Date guys rushed back to England after a whirlwind day.

In a statement from the group early this morning, the band described yesterday as “crazy.”

They said: “Starting at receiving a call early afternoon to be told the Green Day show had been cancelled and was offered to be flown to Glasgow to still perform to fans. Of course, without hesitation, we accepted.

“Then our...flight was delayed whilst the huge venue is at capacity (sorry to anyone turned away from the event) with people.

“Anyway, we got to the venue at 10.50pm and was on stage at 11pm. And...what a reception from the crowd. I mean, we do huge shows which are all amazing as you know but last night was something else.”

“Still no substitute for the real thing, but we all had a blast last night and I hope we turned something proper...into a class night.”

The band also thanked PBR and Saint Luke’s for coming together so quickly, much to the delight of fans who had nowhere to go.

Michael Woods, owner of Saint Luke’s, added :”Massive thanks to PBR for making last night possible.

“Flying the band up within a matter of hours of the cancellation was absolute class, and we were one out, one in by 8pm.

“The show really saved the day for punters who were disappointed by the late cancellation. As you can see from the photos, everyone had an insane time.”

As of 6.50pm last night, the organisers of the Bellahouston Park concert, PCL Presents, insisted the show had to be cancelled because of “adverse weather conditions overnight and throughout the morning.”

In a statement, the group said: “[The weather] during the band’s scheduled load in led to issues on stage.

“A meeting between the on-site health and safety, event management, the artists representatives, and promoters concluded it would be unsafe in the timescale to proceed with the event.

“Ticket holders for the event can be assured they will be able to receive refunds from point of purchase - we expect these to have all processed within ten working days.”
