Usually when cops put an appeal out on social media seeking information in relation to a crime, the public is quick to spring into action to lend a helping hand.

Yesterday, however, things didn’t quite go to plan as expected.

Cops in the Highlands issued an appeal on Facebook searching for details which would lead them to a vandal who spray-painted graffiti on the side of a Stagecoach bus in the small town of Dunvegan.

The vehicle was vandalised while parked near a cemetery, cops believe, sometime between 8pm on Friday, June 30 and 3.30pm on Sunday, July 2.

A fire extinguisher was also taken from the bus.

Urging anyone with any information to come forward, the reaction from many members of the public actually drew praise - for the artistry of the graffiti.

“Got to say, whoever did this is quite talented, if you find out who did it, let me know, my boy would love his bedroom done - paint supplied,” read the most popular comment left under the post.

Another read: “I live and work in Dunvegan, and I can honestly say the artist we have here are of a different breed as this is actually well done. This is more art than graffiti.” He did, however, save himself by sensibly adding: “Not condoning it but still a good job.”

“Not wise doing on someone else’s property..... But pitty talanted [sic],” said another.

Other comments read: “Vandalised how? Looks better than ever,” and : “Omg this. Artist needs a reward. But dude nicking the fire safety is just wrong.”

The post was first brought to the attention of the public after the Lochaber and Skye police Twitter account shared an image of the vandalism.

The accompanying message read: “This. #Dunvegan over the weekend. Really?!

“Please let us know who is stupid enough to do this so they can be made to clean it.”

It is understood that there is no update yet as who is responsible for the act of vandalism.
