DOZENS of families will gather next month to release butterflies in memory of the babies they have lost.

Charity SiMBA works with people who have suffered a miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a child at a very early age.

Last year it unveiled a Tree of Tranquiliy in Provanhall where they can hang a leaf carrying the name of their lost baby.

In August, bereaved parents and relatives will meet at the tree and each will set free a Painted Lady butterfly which is capable of travelling thousands of miles each year.

A total of 120 parents and 33 children attended the first Glasgow event last year which aims to raise awareness of the charity.

Events and fundraising co-ordinator Gillian Wells said: "When a baby died, whether it is because of miscarriage, stillbirth or neo-natal death, a family has very few memories to sustain and comfort them throughout a lifetime of missing their babies.

"The butterfly release means everything to them. The Tree of Tranquility is especially important for people who may have lost babies many years ago and didn't get to see, hold or touch them.

"For many, it is incredibly isolating and knowing you are not on your own and seeing everyone come together is a really emotional day.

"The butterflies are so beautiful and fragile and are only with us for a short time which really sums up how parents feel.

"Our aim is to have the largest butterfly release we have ever had and we would like to invite families to join us.

"There will be entertainment for children, live music and a short service before the butterflies are released followed by a short service."

The butterflies are bred in a disease free environment and go on to help replenish the dwindling number of butterflies in the wild.

SiMBA suggests families who want to take part make a donation of £10 to cover the cost of the butterfly, the venue and the refreshments.

Anyone interested in attending the event on August 26, which is being hosted by SiMBA founder Lisa Hague, should register by August 11. To buy a butterfly go to http://www.simbacharity.org.uk/events/
