MURDER cops have named the man who died after he was stabbed in a park in a Lanarkshire town.

Jason McCue, from East Kilbride, was attacked in the John Hastie Park, Strathaven on Tuesday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 1.30pm where they found the 43-year-old seriously injured.

He was treated by paramedics for his injuries but he died at the scene.

Cops investigating the murder say it was not a random attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bell, senior investigating officer, said: “At this time, we believe that the man who died was the intended target and that this was not an opportunistic or random attack, however, that does not make it any less serious or catching his killer of any less importance to us.

“From our enquiries so far we know that there had been a disturbance in the park involving at least three men and the man that died.

“It was a brazen attack, in the middle of the afternoon and in a very public place.  There were a good number of people in the park at the time, thankfully none of whom were injured during the attack, nonetheless, it was shocking and upsetting for them to witness.

“Officers are checking CCTV in the park and the surrounding area to trace those responsible as well as speaking to people in and around the park.

“There has already been a good response from the public but we are still keen to hear from anyone who has information that will assist our enquiry."

The victim's relatives have been told and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Officers, however, are keen for witnesses to come forward.

Inspector Jim Gillespie, of South Lanarkshire Division, said: “I would like to reassure the local community that my team of uniformed officers are working closely with DCI Bell's team to help identify who is responsible.

"There are additional officers in the park and in Strathaven so if you have any information or concerns regarding the incident, then please speak to them.”

A statement released by the family said: "Jason was a much loved son, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed. The family have asked for privacy at this time to come to terms with their loss."
