Scots actor Martin Compston has been bestowed with a legendary Golden Can of Tennent’s Lager.

The Grennock born actor copped his can as he prepares to star in Mary Queen of Scots, a £180M project where he plays the Earl of Bothwell alongside Hollywood stars Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronin.

Martin said: "I’m genuinely delighted to receive this from Tennent's - a Scottish cultural icon in itself - and it's an honour to be in beside some total legends like Irvine Welsh. I dedicate it to absolutely everyone who's flying the flag for Scottish culture at home and abroad. Cheers!"

He joins a formidable list of Scottish cultural heavyweights including Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, Biffy Clyro, Karen Gillan, Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai, Hudson Mohawk and Jackmaster.

Alan McGarrie, Head of UK Brand Marketing at Tennent’s, said: “As Scotland’s favourite lager, we’re here to serve up recognition for the great and good of Scottish culture, that’s what the Golden Can is all about. Martin has been consistently smashing it for over a decade, so we thought he’d make a fantastic addition to the Golden Can hall of fame.

Compston shot to fame in 2002 for his portrayal of Liam in Sweet Sixteen, for which he won a BAFTA, and has starred in numerous TV series and feature films over the course of his career including 2017 TV hit Line of Duty.
