Primark has today urgently recalled a range of flip-flops amid fears they could contain dangerous levels of a cancer-causing chemical.

According to BBC News, a spokesperson for the retailer confirmed the chemical in question was chrysene which is used in dark-coloured dyes.

However, the spokesperson added it was present at levels that would pose a minimal health and safety risk to customers.

The products affected have been highlighted below.

Glasgow Times:

The high street retailer said: “It has come to our attention that the footwear product detailed above does not meet the Primark usual high standards for chemical compliance.

“We have found levels of a restricted substance in the product in excess of the 1.0 mg/kg requirement.

“With the safety of our customers and respect for the environment at the forefront of our minds, we have taken the decision to recall this product and are therefore inviting you to return this item for a full refund.”

The product was on sale in stores from January 4, 2017 to June 2.

Those who have purchased the product are being urged to return it to any Primark store where a full refund will be offered. Customers will not be required to provide proof of purchase.

The scare comes just four months after Primark recalled a pair of children’s novelty cat leggings after it emerged they could potentially be deadly.
