Police have launched another probe after a racist tweet aimed towards Hoops star Scott Sinclair appeared on the social media website Twitter.

The attack aimed at the Celtic winger received a backlash from fans after a Twitter user posted the monkey emoji and said the player loved bananas.

Several Celtic fans claimed they had reported the incident and Police Scotland confirmed that they will investigate the tweet.

The 28-year-old footballer, who signed for the Hoops last August, has been at the brunt of several racists attacks on social media and at football matches since he moved to Glasgow from Aston Villa.

Sinclair, who dates and has a daughter with Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan,  has previously took to social media to condemn the antics, while his Hoops colleagues have backed him by sharing anti-racism messages.

He previously said: “It seems it will always be around with a minority of people - it’s always going to be there.

“For me there will always be people like that - I’ve got to carry on with my football and keep enjoying that.

“In football we want to kick it out because there’s no need for it. If any player goes through it you have to keep your head down and keep going on but you want it kicked out.

“My team-mates have got right behind me. They didn’t realise until after the game that it had happened - just like I did.

“It was great to get my team-mates support. That’s the first time it has happened here, the first time in my career actually so I was quite taken aback by it."

Last season, Sinclair was voted Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year at Celtic's Player of the Year Awards.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "The tweet has been passed to the relevant department to progress as appropriate."

Previously several people have appeared in court to be sentenced for several hate crimes towards the player.

We previously reported that Paul Kenny avoided jail after making a monkey gesture at the player when he scored during Celtic's 5-1 win against Rangers at Ibrox Stadium on April 29.

Kenny, 28, from Girvan was captured on camera and later identified from social media.

He received a Community Payback Order with 100 hours unpaid work and an 18 month Football Banning Order.
