Brendan Rodgers has given his backing to Leigh Griffiths in light of his Uefa charge but urged the striker to take swift heed of the lesson.

And he said the Celtic striker needed to use a little commonsense if he doesn’t want to find himself back on the outside looking in at the club.

Griffiths has been charged by Uefa this week for his part in the ugly scenes at Linfield last Friday night in the opening leg of Celtic’s second round Champions League qualifier.

Griffiths was one of five Parkhead players booked – a sanction that came in bizarre circumstances as he looked to avoid being hit with an assortment of glass bottles and coins– but it was his decision to tie a Celtic scarf onto a post at Windsor Park that led to a charge of ‘provoking spectators’ for the player himself.

The Scotland internationalist is a doubt for this evening’s return leg at Celtic Park with a minor calf issue, however while Rodgers has urged the player to appreciate the appreciate the full consequence of his actions he was unequivocal in his support of the him.

The player faces at least a one-game ban in addition to missing tonight’s game with injury and Rodgers has warned the player that ultimately he could find himself out of the team because of a moment of madness.

“He is not one that I would ever want to lose here,” said the Celtic manager. “In him I cannot see him ever doing anything that would make me push him out. I support him off the field and on the field I help him and coach him along with the staff to make him better.

“I’ve had nothing to say really to Leigh, only the fact that there is a consequence of that, if that’s what you do, and it may mean you might end up missing games,” said Rodgers. “And one thing we need to have on the field, mentally and tactically, is discipline.

“I was surprised by the booking. I think probably how the game ended, on the pitch afterwards, probably played a part in that. It’s a lesson learned for him, it could mean that he misses a Champions League qualification game, which is a huge game for the club and it’s a huge game for him considering he wants to be available and play all the time.

“For me, I really like him. There have been so many instances and last season I kept hearing that he was on his way . Everyone makes mistakes and will have their wee issues. If it gets to the point where it is disruptive to what I am doing and ultimately to what the team’s ambition is then I would cut straight away, but it is never that. He is a really good boy. He has issues and challenges, professionally and personally, but I have found him a really good man who wants to play football and score goals.”

Celtic’s charge from Uefa will be heard on Thursday, but the expectation is that Griffiths could face a ban of at least one game.

Similarly, Celtic are back in the dock for the accumulation of five bookings in the game, something that Rodgers was somewhat perturbed at.

“We play the game with a lot of tactical discipline and I have no worries about the squad,” he said. “I think you’ve seen the team and the respect and the sporting behaviour and how they play, I don’t really have to go into that too much. I think we picked up five bookings and it’s like we had five sendings off! Sometimes you go into European football and it’s like that, the referees and officials can be a wee bit sensitive, especially in a ‘British’ game as such.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers insisted that there is nothing to say on reports coming out of London yesterday that a move for Steven Caulker was imminent, although formal talks are said to have been opened.

However, Emilio Izaguirre looks as though he is on his way out of the club.

Saudi Arabian side Al-Faiha are keen on taking the Honduran internationalist.

“There is an offer for him that is with him and his agent,” said Rodgers. “We have other options if he was to go. It’s just whether it’s the right time for that.”
