THE Evening Times has its very own karate kid, who is juggling between chopping his way to competition wins and delivering a paper round.

Sporty Harry McKay, 13, is so committed to karate, that he even uses all the money earned from his paper round towards paying to take part in competitions.

The junior black belt, who is a pupil at Renfrew High School, started training in Shitokai karate at just three years old.

His mum Jacqueline Cuthbertson explained she did judo as a youngster and wanted her own sons to learn a martial art for discipline.

And while his older brother Jack McKay, 15, quit the sport, young Jack has kept grafting away winning top competitions under the guidance of sensei’s Terry Connell, Martin Douglas and Stephanie Connell at Renfrew Sports Centre.

Jacqueline, who lives with partner Christopher Smith and is also mum to Cameron, 4, said: “Karate is totally self funded and Harry started competing at six.

“He took over his brother’s paper round and now what he earns delivering The Evening Times, around £50 a week, goes into a fund for his karate.

“He is coming of age where he can go forward for selection for the Scotland squad so it all helps.”

Harry has been doing his paper round for several years around the Renfrew area.

Recently, he took part in the World Karate Federation Youth World Cup in Croatia.

He competed in the under 14s, 55kg weight category and walked away with a bronze medal after several fights.

Mum Jacqueline said: “I am really proud that Harry manages to juggle everything and fits it in.

“Harry is easy going and take things in his stride.

“He won a medal despite five broken bones which he incurred during karate.

“He was out of commission in the run up to Croatia so he has done brilliant.”

She added: “When he got bronze we were over the moon, we were all crying.

“Harry is so grateful to all his customers because that is how he gets his funding to compete in competitions.”
