CELTIC face a wait to find out if their stadium will be granted a safety certificate for this season following police warnings over flares set off by fans.

The club has been forced to seek an extension to their stadium safety certificate to allow the Champions League qualifier at Celtic Park tomorrow night to go ahead.

The certificate for the ground expired on July 22 but has been extended to the 31st of this month.

One day before the certificate expired, Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, announced the safe standing area used by the Green Brigade would be closed for two matches.

The action was understood to be in response to UEFA disciplinary charges following banners at the recent match against Linfield.

However, at a meeting in June, Police Scotland raised concerns with the club about fans at the match against Hearts on May 21 when several flares were set off from the stand in the 67th minute to celebrate the Lisbon Lions European Cup triumph.

The Club were told to return with a plan to deal with the problem to prevent a repeat before a certificate could be signed off.

Glasgow City Council, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue are meeting on Thursday at the Safety Advisory Group with club officials to discuss renewal for the coming season.

Celtic will be expected to inform the authorities how it has reacted to the concerns relating to the flares at the Hearts match.

The day before the certificate expired, Mr Lawwell took action to close the section which affects 900 season-ticket holders in the safe-standing section where the Green Brigade gather.

It will be closed for the European tie against Rosenborg and the opening match of the season also against Hearts.

In his statement closing the section, Mr Lawwell cited concerns around fans’ behaviour at the Linfield match but also over the flares set off at the Hearts match in May.

A spokesman for the council said: “The safety concerns created by the use of pyrotechnics at Celtic Park on May 21 have been raised with the club within the Safety Advisory Group.

“We have been in dialogue with the club to find a way to ensure this kind of incident is not repeated.

“We expect to hear further detail from the club on the action they have taken to allay the concerns created by the incident.

“We will continue to work with the club to ensure spectator safety is protected.”

Police Scotland declined to comment on the matter.

Celtic FC were contacted for comment but did not respond.
