RENTS for private rented flats in Glasgow have reached an all-time high just days before the official launch of a tenants union in the city.

With Living Rent aiming to establishing itself as a union this Saturday it was revealed that private sector rents in Glasgow had reached an average of £755 a month.

Now, the latest rent hikes have lead to union reps saying a body supporting the rights of tenants is needed now more than ever.

Sean Baillie, the fledgling union, said: “Now more than ever this highlights the growing necessity for an independent tenants union, with latest figures showing there are over 327,000 renters in Glasgow with an ever increasing number of them renting in an unaffordable private sector. We must unite as one solid voice and rebalance the power between landlord and tenants.”

A spokesman for Living Rent said: “With the high cost of private rents now being the biggest cause of homelessness and over three and half million days of temporary accommodation being needed to stop people ending up on the streets it’s time for a tenants union.”

The group planned to form the union just weeks after the Grenfell tragedy.
