GLASGOW Caledonian University (GCU) engineering students have achieved a hat-trick for the institution by once again winning the final of the CIOB Global Student Challenge in Hong Kong.
And to take the top gong they had to fight off undergraduates from Cambridge University and Loughborough University.
GCU has now won the past three finals of the world-wide competition, run by the Chartered Institute of Building, which develops leadership skills by challenging students to run their own construction company in a simulated environment using bespoke software.
Team tutor Mark Phillipson, who travelled to Hong Kong for the finals with the students, said: “I am absolutely delighted that our students continue to flourish and prove themselves against the best students globally.”
The competition tests the teams’ strategic, marketing and financial skills, and is designed so that each team member takes on a role such as managing director or financial manager.
GCU’s team, ‘Tartan Construction’, completed a number of elimination rounds in the UK before heading to the Hong Kong final ahead of the five other qualifying universities.
Despite a points reset for the final, the team, consisting of Michael Bill, Paul McAllister, Christopher Rice and Philip Tully from the BEng in Building Services Engineering programme, continued their stellar form to the finish.
