TWO iconic Glasgow buildings will be given a new lease of life through the creation of a hotel and student accommodation.

The Metropolitan Tower, also known as the College of Building and Printing and the Charles Oakley Building on Cathedral Street will be converted as part of a £100m scheme.

The ‘Glasgow Metropolitan Hotel’ will be created by converting the tower building and constructing a new linked building fronting Cathedral Street.

A total of 640 hotel rooms will be created with another 20,000 sq ft made available for conference and meeting space, a bar, restaurant and ancillary retail space.

The Charles Oakley Building will be turned into 400 serviced student accommodation complete with parkland.

Members of the public have until 4pm on Tuesday August 8 to have their say prior to a planning application being made.

Plans for the buildings will be on public display at an exhibition on Saturday July 29 between 10.30am and 4pm in the foyer of the Metropolitan Tower.

Developers Study Inn has estimated that the development will create over 600 construction jobs as well as 250 permanent operational jobs.

The project is hoped to enhance the quarter of the city with provision of new open space, pathways through the developments and improvement of the street scene.

Study Inn Director Kieran Leahy said: “We are delighted that our first Scottish project is in Glasgow and gives us the opportunity to work with these two fantastic landmark properties.

“We know that tourism, commerce and education are all vital elements of the city’s economy and these plans will make a positive contribution to all those sectors.”

“These projects would not work in every City, but Glasgow has the special combination of characteristics which make it attractive and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to make this significant investment for the Study Inn Group.”

If plans go ahead, the hotel will be one of several hotel and student accommodation developments currently in the pipeline for the city.

As previously reported in the Evening Times, disused offices in the city centre will be transformed into a new affordable hotel.

Plans have been unveiled for an ibis Styles Glasgow Centre West on Waterloo Street which will include 137 rooms open to the public in summer 2018.

Other plans include a luxury 64-bedroom £8 million development on St Vincent Place, a Motel One on Oswald Street, a 175-bedroom Innside by Melia at the Westergate Building and a Radisson Red on Finnieston Street.

Among the plans for student accomodation is a development of 100 studio apartments on the site of a former playground at Kelvinhaugh Primary in Gilbert Street, by Ryder Architects.

Plans have also been lodged by Candleriggs Ltd for 586 student rooms in the Trongate area, in one of the city’s biggest ever housing developments.

A collection of boutique flats is also planned for the former City of Glasgow College Tower in North Frederick Street.
