IT might be the summer holidays but these school pupils were still hard at work clearing up their community.

Children from four Govanhill primary schools took part in a litter pick in the area, making sure local streets were left spick and span.

Pupils carrying out the clean up are all part of Big Noise Govanhill, a social change project aiming to improve lives through music.

The event was organised by Govanhill Housing Association.

David Zabiega, Sustainable Communities Coordinator with the association, said: “The kids were keen to see each other's schools so St Bride’s Primary teamed up with Annette Street Primary while Holy Cross Primary got together with Cuthbertson Primary.

"It gave them a chance to mix with each other while also learning about another aspect of community life, that is, taking care of your community."

Around 20 pupils from the Big Noise Govanhill summer programme took part.

They filled a dozen bin bags of rubbish from the streets around their schools.

Elaine Sheerin, Neighbourhood Improvement and Enforcement Officer with Community Safety Glasgow, provided the kit for taking part.

Youngsters were awarded certificates for achievement and good citizenship at the end of the day for their efforts.

Pupils take part in a four week intense music course with Big Noise, coming in five days a week for lessons.

Nicola Killean, Chief Executive of Sistema Scotland, said: “The children and musicians from Big Noise Govanhill were delighted to support the local community on the clean-up which was organised by Govanhill Housing Association.

“Being involved in these community projects helps the children to take a pride in their neighbourhood, work as part of a team and recognise the importance of keeping the streets clean.”
