Kirsty Maxwell could have tried to clamber down the side of her Benidorm hotel just moments before she plunged to her death, a new witness claims.

Residents in a building across from where the 26-year-old was staying say they indicated to Spanish police that someone had been trying to get down to the next floor of the Apartmentos Payma Hotel around the time of her death.

It's understood Mrs Maxwell had been in a 'state of terror' when she tried to escape the holiday apartment where five British men had been staying.

Now a new witness may have key information on how Kirsty died on April 29.

Family consultant David Swindle told STV news: "This guy came forward who gave us really detailed information about seeing the police activity.

"He took some snapshots of what was going on and he said at that time while the police were there, there were Spanish-speaking people shouting from their balcony at the Hotel Presidente.

"These people were shouting at police while pointing to the floor where Kirsty had been in as well as also pointing down. He got the impression someone was climbing from that balcony to get to the floors below."

Callum Northridge, 27, Ricky Gammon, 31, Daniel Bailey, 32, and 34-year-old Anthony Holehouse all appeared in court earlier this week.

Lawyers representing Kirsty's family claim she was trying to escape from the men in the apartment when she fell from the tenth-floor.

In a joint statement the four men said: "This was a tragic accident and we categorically deny any involvement in this unfortunate incident.

"It goes without saying that our deepest sympathy goes out to Kirsty's family and our thoughts are with them all at this terrible time."

A fifth man, Joseph Graham, was arrested and held by Spanish police for 48 hours following Ms Maxwell's death.

He was later released on bail and allowed to return to the UK.

The case is set to continue later this year.
