FUNDING to tackle homelessness in Glasgow has been cut by more than £100,000 in the last ten years figures show.

Johann Lamont, Glasgow Labour MSP, asked the Scottish Government for details of funding to groups in the city.

The data shows in 2006/07 the then, Scottish Executive, provided £523,074 to eight organisations.

By 2011/12 it had been cut year on year to £312,000 before rising over four years to £406,827. However in the last year 2016/17the cash was cut again down to £396,934.

Ms Lamont said money and resources are needed to ease the situation in the city.

She said: “The scale of the homelessness crisis in Glasgow has become more evident in recent weeks. These figures only tell us what we already know, there has to be real investment in services dedicated to tackling homelessness in the city.”

Ms Lamont said the cuts plus reductions in the council budget have had an impact on services.

She added: “Since 2007, Glasgow City Council’s budget has been slashed by £377m by the Scottish Government. This coupled with the funding reduction to the very organisations set up to tackle homelessness has not helped the problem.”

Glasgow City Council held a summit earlier this month to investigate solutions and share practice among organisations working to address rough sleeping in Glasgow.

Ms Lamont added: “These figures come just after a summit on homelessness told us more work is needed to improve the level of service to homeless people.

“My challenge to Scottish Ministers is to take heed of what is being said by the professionals and properly fund the local authority and third sector organisations in Glasgow. ”

A Scottish Government spokesman: “We recognise the important role that third sector organisations and local government play in helping people who find themselves in housing need. That is why we are continuing to invest in programmes that help deliver our ambitions through our partners in the third sector.

“ Each council has a statutory obligation to address homelessness in their area and the Scottish Government will continue to work with each local authority to ensure they use these resources to fund third sector organisations involved in tackling homelessness.”
