WORKERS at Ibrox Stadium were given an early morning surprise when a man tried to break into the building.

Paul Simmons was spotted by security who were inside the stadium on Edmiston Drive around 5.45am on July 9.

The 43-year-old went to the main entrance and started banging on the door until staff spoke to him on intercom.

Incoherent Simmons walked away from the door and was seen walking towards cars parked outside and trying to get inside them.

The guards then watched Simmons, of Stornoway, walk around the concourse and try to gain entry to a lockfast Portakabin before they contacted police.

Simmons appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for setencing after pleading guilty to using bodily force to try to open the Portakabin, a number of cars and gain entry to the stadium, with the intention to steal.

His defence agent told the court that his client had been released from prison earlier in the day.

Instead of travelling back to his home in Stornoway, he took Diazapam tablets and alcohol.

As a result, he has little recollection of his behaviour.

Sheriff Ruxton said that because Simmons has a very serious record and was out on licence at the time of the offence, she had no other option but to send him back to custody.

He was ordered to spend four months behind bars.
