PLANS to build a new housing development in the south of Glasgow have been given the green light.

The council’s planning committee decided to grant permission for 77 new homes to be built on the former St Oswald’s Secondary School just off Brunton Street and Craig Road.

However, progress of the proposal was almost stopped in its tracks after a lengthy discussion over the objections raised by residents led to one member of the committee to ask for the plans to be reconsidered.

With objections over increased road safety and access points to the site Councillor Hanzala Malik said he felt the plans did not do enough to satisfy the questions raised.

He said: “The issues raised surrounding the increased traffic flow and the tight roads should be addressed and the developers have not done enough to reassure this committee.”

Councillor Malik then raised a motion to have the plans reconsidered. But no-one offered to back it up. The plans will see a mixture of flats and town houses built on the site which has been lying empty since the high school was knocked down.

Councillor Malcolm Cunning also shared concerns of traffic flow and parking problems.

The councillor for the area said residents were right to raise concerns about the tightness of the roads and the problems that could cause. But having attended the public consultations he said the concerns were the public were listened to and he believed the developer had taken them on board.

He added: “The site is rather ugly and I would say, despite justified reservations from residents, the development should be allowed to progress.
