Rail workers in Glasgow have protested against rising rail fares in the face of staff cuts.

Workers at Glasgow Central Station took part in a UK-wide demonstration to warn passengers that they are paying “more for less”.

The protest comes as the Retail Price Index inflation, which is used to set rail season ticket prices, rose to 3.6 per cent in July.

Commuters will be affected by the change, with off-peak fares rising in cost.

Analysis by the RMT, the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, found that rail fares have increased at twice the speed of wages since 2010.

Costs have risen by around 32 per cent in eight years, while average weekly earnings have only grown by 16 per cent.

According to the RMT, rail engineering work is being delayed or cancelled, skilled railway jobs are being lost and staff are being cut on trains, stations and ticket offices, despite the hike in prices.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “Government policy of suppressing workers’ wages while at the same time presiding over corporate welfare on our privatized railway has resulted in a toxic combination of fare rises easily outstripping wages.

“The private operators and government say the rises are necessary to fund investment but the reality is that they are pocketing the profits while passengers are paying more for less with rail engineering work being delayed or cancelled, skilled railway jobs being lost and staff cut on trains, stations and at ticket offices.

"The huge hike in fares confirmed today is another kick in the teeth for passengers who ‎already fork out colossal sums to travel on rammed out, unreliable trains while the private operators are laughing all the way to the bank.

"With over three quarters of Britain's railways now in the hands of foreign states these huge sums of money aren't being invested in essential upgrades and modernisation here, they are being siphoned off to subsidise transport services over the Channel.

"It's no wonder we are a global laughing stock.

"The only solution to the Great British Private Rail Rip-Off is public ownership and an end to this Government sponsored racketeering."
