Irish boxer Conor McGregor has reached out to Celtic fans after they unveiled a banner in honour of the UFC superstar in the standing section of Parkhead last night.

McGregor - who takes on boxing legend Floyd Mayweather next weekend - was taken aback at the display from the Green Brigade which read: “We’re not here to take part. We’re here to take over!”

The motif was a nod to the comments he made after he defeated Diego Brandao in 2014.

Taking to Twitter, the 29-year-old reigning Lightweight Champion said of the display this morning: “Celtic Football Club STAND UP!!!

Glasgow Times:

“This is what die hard support from your fans looks like!

“What a sight! What a team!

“Thank you all!”

The post has gone down a storm with the vast majority of sports fans having racked to over 31,000 reactions in just two hours.

Celtic Football Club also retweeted his post, adding: “Hail Hail! Best of luck next week in Vegas!”

The Green Brigade returned to Celtic Park after a three-match absence after the club announced they were to close the section of their stadium for the next two matches at the end of July after "serious incidents of unsafe behaviour" in the match against Hearts on May 27 and the Champions League qualifier against Linfield.

McGregor’s comments came as Celtic confidently planted one foot into the Champions League group stages with a 5-0 thumping of Astana in the first leg of their play-off at Parkhead last night.
