TRIBUTES have been paid to former Glasgow councillor Andy Muir who has died.

Mr Muir, who was Labour councillor for Baillieston from 2008 until 2011, and was from Garrowhill, is believed to have been recently diagnosed with cancer.

It follows the loss of three other Labour stalwarts this year including Cardonald councillor Alistair Watson and Gerald Leonard.

Mr Muir, who is said to have been 37, previously worked as a librarian in the east end of the city and was the son of a police officer.

Former council leader Frank McAveety said: “It’s been a tough time for Glasgow Labour and the news of the passing of former Labour Cllr Andy Muir at such a young age is another tough one.”

Councillor Jim Coleman, Labour councillor for Baillieston, said: “It’s really shocking.

“He was only about 37. I had heard he was in hospital but he had been looking forward to getting out.

“I had heard that he was in hospital after falling off his bike and they found something.”

Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council tweeted: “Very sad to hear of the death of former Baillieston councillor Andy Muir at a tragically young age. My thoughts are with his loved ones.”

Stephen Curran tweeted: “So sad former Baillieston council colleague Andy Muir passed away, always a good friend and campaigner, thoughts and prayers with his family.”
