A ROBBER held up a busy city centre newsagents before bolting from the scene with the cash register in tow.

Cops are now investigating the robbery at News Plus Newsagents which happened at around 1.50am on Sunday, August 20 at 1.50am.

The robber entered the shop, across from Cineworld, and threatened staff, demanding money.

The robber, who was in the company of another man, then left the premises with a cash register containing a three figure sum of cash and made off along Renfrew Street, towards Buchannan Bus Station.

It is believed he then got in a taxi.

Police say they are now examining CCTV footage and speaking to local business as they begin their hunt for the robber.

They are keen to trace a man who was seen getting into a ‘Euro7’ style black hackney taxi at around 2am near to the junction of North Hanover Street and Bath Street.

The man was dropped off in Whitevale Street near to the junction with Duke Street at around 2.10am.

The man is described as white, around 30 years old, and he was wearing a dark coloured hooded jacket and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Detective Sergeant Scott McNulty, from the Community Investigation Unit based at Govan, said: “Glasgow City Centre would have been busy around the time of the incident, with people making their way home from nights out.

"The suspect was carrying a cash register, which is something people may have noticed, and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen him to please contact police.

“From our enquiries so far we understand that the suspect entered a taxi shortly after the incident took place and we are also looking to trace the driver as he may have vital information to assist with our investigation.
