A SEEDY driver repeatedly behaved in a threatening manner towards women on the streets of Glasgow's Southside - and exposed himself to two victims.

First time offender Waseem Akram was found guilty after a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court of several offences involving five women including a 61-year-old victim.

He was in the dock at the city court yesterday to be sentenced for the offences which happened during May and June, last year.

Akram, 23, approached his first victim on May 2 at Bankhead Road, Rutherglen. He repeatedly approached the woman in his car and made several attempts to engage her in conversation.

He also uttered comments of a sexual nature towards the woman and made an offensive gesture.

A few days later, he targeted his next victim at Kingsbridge Drive, Rutherglen. During this offence on May 6, he approached the woman again in his car and attempted to engage her in conversation.

Akram’s defence agent John Kilcoyne told the court that he had asked this woman about her dog.

On the same day, he targeted another woman on Castlemilk Road. He approached the woman in his car and attempted to engage her in conversation. He also commented on her appearance.

Mr Kilcoyne told the court that on this occasion he told the woman she was beautiful.

Almost a month later, his next victim was targeted on Allison Street, Govanhill on June 4. While within his car he did intentionally expose his genitals in a sexual manner to the woman and did masturbate.

Mr Kilcoyne told the court that his private parts were not exposed but he did have his hands over that area.

The final offence he was found guilty of took place the next day on June 5 at Glencairn Drive, Rutherglen. While in his car he approached a 61-year-old woman and exposed himself to her.

During mitigation, Mr Kilcoyne told the court that his client was from a good family background. The sales manager lived at home with his parents and was waiting on his wife gaining a visa to come from Pakistan.

Mr Kilcoyne said: “This is a first offence. He has never been in trouble before. He is very concerned about the outcome of this. If he received a custodial sentence, it would put his life in disarray.

He added: “He does appreciate that the charges are alarming.”

Sheriff Findlay addressed Akram, of Kings Park Avenue, and said the behaviour he was found guilty of is concerning.

He ordered him to be placed under supervision for two years. He must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work in the community within six months.

He was also subject to notifications under the Sex Offenders Register for two years for some of the charges.

The disposal was given as an alternative to custody.

Sheriff Findlay warned Akram that if he breached the Community Payback Order, he would be going to jail.

Akram will be back before Sheriff Findlay for a review of his progress in six months time.
