The body of a pensioner who vanished after dropping his car off for a service has been found.

James McGhie, also known as Jimmy, 69, went missing after leaving his home in Easter Road, Shotts on Monday, to travel to a garage in Shields Road, Motherwell.

His heartbroken family confirmed that his body was found in Garrion Burn, South Lanarkshire, on Monday afternoon.

His daughters Michelle and Kerrie McGhie thanked the public for their support.

Writing on the Find Jimmy McGhie Facebook page, Kerrie said: "Thank u all for ur incredible support and help...could never thank u all enough for everything u have done.

"Dunno how I would of ever made it thro any of this without u all.

"My Dad would be amazed by ur kindness and would buy u all a drink.

"Thank u all again on behalf of all my family and my Dad."

Michelle added: "I am so glad I made the decision to come back home for my Dad Jimmy when I did.

"I would like to say a massive thank u to all the amazing people who have helped my family through this difficult time.

"Especially to Neil Macaulay for being my sisters rock.

"Tonight I am proud to be Scottish.

"Thank u to the wonderful people who helped us so much I just can't name the amount of people, the list would go in forever.

"Sleep tight tonight Daddy with the angels. I just can't imagine my life without u in it. My best friend. My heart will be forever empty"

The pensioner had previously indicated to members of staff at the garage that he intended to travel to Hamilton as he wanted to have his mobile phone repaired.

Following enquiries, officers managed to locate Mr McGhie on CCTV alighting from a bus on Law Road End at around 11.20am on Monday.

A crowdfunding page has been set up to help the family, with £625 being raised so far.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "At around 1350, we recieved reports of a body being recovered by our underwater investigation team in Garrion Burn, between Law and Waterloo in Wishaw.

"The body has not been formally identified but it is believed to be that of missing man James McGhie.

"His family have been made aware.

"There is thought to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal."
