A MAN who vowed to walk down the aisle to his new bride after losing his legs has achieved that dream.

Shaun Whiter was injured in a hit-and-run last July, losing both of his legs in the horrific crash.

But the courageous young footballer was determined to walk at his wedding to fiancee Charlotte Way.

Now he has achieved his goal - and even had a fly by after the ceremony from the air ambulance crew who saved his life.

Shaun, who married Charlotte in St Augustine Church, Newmarket, said: “In hospital, the moment I realised I’d lost my legs the first thing I did was ask Charlotte if we were still getting married.

"I was terrified she wouldn’t want to anymore.

"When she said yes, the next thing I said was that I was going to walk her down the aisle.

“I’m delighted I managed to do that."

The Evening Times told last August how Shaun's cousin John, and John's wife Lucy, were planning to climb 4,409ft up Ben Nevis to raise £4,409.

The couple, from Partick, achieved that goal, spurred on by Shaun's bravery.

On the evening of July 1 last year, Shaun had left his home in Stansted, Essex, to help a friend, Joey Abbs, fix a flat tyre.

The car had broken down just a few streets from Shaun's house and he had no hesitation in helping his friend.

But the 28-year-old was hit by another car as he worked at the side of the road and was pinned between his car and Joey's.

Both men were left in a critical condition and Shaun was rushed to Cambridge Addenbrooke's Hospital where Shaun had emergency surgery to amputate his legs.

The talented young footballer had only just signed to Newmarket Town FC.

A fitness fan, he had also used his time to raise thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in triathlons and long-distance bike rides.

Jan Adamec, 40, of Haverhill, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He did not stop following the crash and was last year sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court to 40 months in prison.

Shaun is now looking to the future and has plans to continue with sport by joining the Paralympic rowing team with a view to competing at Tokyo 2020.

He also completed a 150-mile cycle for charity in May this year.

He added: "The wedding was brilliant and Charlotte looked absolutely stunning.

"I’m so excited to start the next chapter of my life with my new wife.”
