PROTESTERS were stationed outside a popular west end venue following claims that staff were unfairly dismissed.

Better than Zero, a group that campaigns for better worker rights, have slammed the Grosvenor on Ashton Lane which is owned by the G1 Group.

It is alleged that that 10 employees were sacked on Wednesday after using too much of their staff discount over a four month period.

And while a disciplinary and appeal process is being carried out with Unite the union, Better than Zero have launched a campaign.

It hopes to "ensure that customers and other staff alike are exposed to the hypocrisy of Scotland's largest hospitality employer" - the G1 Group.

The protest took place on Saturday evening and is set to continue every week until the dismissed members of staff are reinstated.

According to Better than Zero, access to discount buttons on tills at the venue is limited, which sees staff put food through on behalf of colleagues.

It has also been claimed the amount of money saved by the workers in question ranged from £1.89 to £30.

However the company is said to have made £70.5 million in revenue last year.

Sarah Collins, from Better than Zero said: "Staff in these G1 venues, who often work shifts of up to 16 hours with little or no break, receive 50 per cent staff discount on food they order whilst on shift.

"However, not every member of staff has access to the discount function on the till.

"As such, they need to ask their colleagues to put their food through the till system for them.

"Managers instruct staff to do this and alert them to the discount facility."

One member of staff who has been dismissed said: “I’ve put my heart and soul into working for this company for over a year.

"We get paid minimum wage which is difficult to manage on, but we’ve always had a good atmosphere at work with everyone getting along.

"We’ve covered shifts at short notice, regularly worked 12 hours, often forsaken breaks, and made the company a lot of money by up selling.

"Then they do this to us. It’s a complete kick in the teeth for the sake of £1.89."

The G1 Group has since reponded to the claims. The complete statement from the company can be read here.
