GLASGOW open water swimmer Mark Deans has clinched the title in one of the world’s toughest open water contests

More than 185 swimmers from 14 nations battled the rain in Bergs Slussar and Göta Kanal in Sweden at this year’s Red Bull Neptune Steps event.

Competitors fought their way through 11 locks and 900 meters of cold water.

Mark, from Jordanhill, recorded a winning time of 12:59.2, two seconds slower than his winning run last year.

He said: “My main competitors pulled away a bit more than I’d liked in the first half of the race.

“But I managed to gain on them and pass them at the longer swim section.

“ I guess the key to success here is all the hours I’ve spent swimming long distance racing.”

On the women’s side Annie Thoren was neck to neck against British rival and Red Bull Neptune Steps Glasgow 2017 winner Jennifer Davis throughout the race, but managed to break free and cross the finish line with a 5.1 second lead.
