Glasgow Cathedral is inviting parents from all walks of life who have lost young children to a special remembrance service this month.

The Saying Goodbye Services are the first international set of events for people who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy, no matter how long ago the loss occurred.

The event aims to provide a time and place to acknowledge and remember lost babies, while collectively allowing grieving parents to “say goodbye.”

The service also welcomes those who are struggling to deal with the fact they may not be able to have children.

The morning is for people of any faith or no faith and are free to attend. Whole families are also encouraged to attend.

Each service contains at least one act of remembrance or “symbolic act.” This may be the lighting of a candle or the ringing of a hand bell as a mark of remembrance and acknowledging a life cut short.

The services are filled with secular music and poetry, allowing families to remember and grieve, as well as a short message of hope by senior clergy, and short prayers.

Regardless of faith or beliefs, organisers hope that some, or all of these elements, will bring some peace to the bereaved.

Organisers said: “Together we may stand and say, ‘Our children may have only been on this Earth for days, weeks, months, or years, but they were truly loved and will always be missed’.”

The service is also taking place in seven other cities across the UK, as well as across the globe.

The touching initiative has been set up by Saying Goodbye which is the primary division of the Mariposa Trust, a UK based charity that provides support to anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.
