YOBS pelting buses with stones and rubbish have caused more than £10,000 worth of damage in a fortnight.

The First Bus vehicles travelling through Castlemilk have been targeted driving through Castlemilk's Ardencraig and Birgidale Road.

On several occasions windows have been smashed and drivers have had to stop the service to wait for help.

Police have now stepped up patrols in the area in a bid to catch the culprits.

They have requested permission from the bus firm to view the on-board CCTV footage, in case it has captured images of those involved while driving past.

It is understood the incidents began earlier this month, with numerous calls being made to police by the bus firm.

Services which run through the roads affected include numbers 5, 34A, 75 and 34, and provide a vital transport link for residents in Castlemilk.

Over the past Saturday and Sunday, four separate incidents were reported to officials.

Bus chiefs say more than £10,000 worth of damage has been caused in repairs and lost revenue due to to problems, and concerns are growing for the risk the incidents pose to the public, including other road users and bus passengers.

Nobody has been injured by the missiles so far, however drivers have had to cancel their routes to get emergency repair work done to windows.

A First Glasgow spokesperson said: “The safety of our customers and staff is paramount and we condemn any vandalism or behaviour which puts that safety at risk.

“We urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact the police.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed the service has received numerous reports of objects being thrown at buses in the area.

She said: "Patrols have been increased to try and catch those responsible, with extra officers being deployed.

" We have received a number of reports of incidents, including four just this weekend."
