Memorabilia and ephemera relating to Celtic and Scotland’s international goalkeeper, John Thomson, will go under the hammer at Great Western Auctions tomorrow.

Tragically, due to an injury sustained in an Old Firm match in September 1931, Thomson, from Fife, later died cutting short his Celtic and international career.

Thomson was in goal for Celtic at Ibrox when he and Rangers player Sam English went for the ball at the same time.

English’s knee hit Thomson’s head, fracturing his skull and rupturing an artery in his temple.

He was rushed to hospital but died that night, aged just 22.

Four years ago Celtic players travelled to the goalkeeper’s home town of Cardenden in Fife for a graveside ceremony as they consider him to be an important part of the club's history.

Memorabilia which forms part of the collection include an 18ct gold Football Medal (estimate £300-500), a pair of 9ct gold cuff links (estimate £100-200).

A collection of black and white photographs relating to John’s career including action shots and images of the tackle (estimate £150-200) and a collection of black and white photographs and ephemera relating to the funeral of Thomson.
