A DAD punched a woman repeatedly on the face after becoming uncontrollably drunk at a Hogmanay party.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Aram Ahmed was celebrating with his partner and her friends when he punched his victim three times to the side of the head.

When police were called to the party, on December 31 2016, Ahmed became increasingly aggressive, shouting, swearing and writhing about on the floor.

The 32-year-old's defence lawyer said that Ahmed, who does not usually drink, was "out of it" by 10.30pm that night and has "scant recollection" of events.

The lawyer added: "He is ashamed and disgusted by his behaviour.

"He is a family man with four children under the age of 12.

"He is a hands-on father who runs his own business as a mobile mechanic.

"He does not normally drink but it was that time of year and the drink set him off."

Sheriff Lindsay Wood told the defendant to stand and said: "You have a drink problem."

Ahmed, from Pollok, replied: "No I don't."

Sheriff Wood said: "You do. A lot of people take a drink and they don't punch women.

"You can't even remember what you did and the reasons for it."

The sheriff placed Ahmed on a Community Payback Order for 12 months with 120 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.

Ahmed is to attend alcohol counselling and was tagged for four months, keeping him at home between 9.30pm and 6am.

Sheriff Wood added: "Breach that and you will be back in front of me - and it will be a different game then."
