A LIFE-LONG Celtic fan has kicked off the challenge of the football season - by cycling to every single one of the club’s Scottish Premiership away matches.

David Edgar began his amazing cycling feat by riding from his Carntyne home to Partick Thistle’s stadium in Firhill last month.

Since then, the 32-year-old has clocked up the miles cycling to the stadiums of Kilmarnock, Hamilton and Rangers football clubs.

He faces his biggest challenge yet on the journey when he travels 180 miles to Pittodrie for the Hoops clash with Aberdeen on October 25.

But David will complete the journey for the mid-week clash over two days.

And he has pushed through the tough challenge of 19 away cycles knowing that it was started to raise vital funds for the club’s charity arm, the Celtic FC Foundation.

David, whose journey has been nicknamed Bhoy on the Road, said: “I had always wanted to do something involving cycling and raising money for the Celtic Foundation but I wasn’t sure what to do.

“During the summer, I was in the pub with my brother Allan and he came up with this idea.”

He added: “Initially we laughed it off but as the weeks went past, the idea started to take hold in my head.”

David took up cycling around six years ago after previously keeping himself fit through running.

He said: “I enjoy cycle touring and I have cycled from Glasgow to Berlin before.

“I enjoy seeing new places and I have actually not cycled around much of Scotland. So that was one of the reasons for me doing the away games.”

The senior housing officer, who works in Maryhill, cycles to work most days, and he hopes the challenge will raise awareness of the important work that the Celtic FC Foundation does.

He also wants to give the charity a financial boost by raising £5,000 through his online page.

He said: “The furthest cycle I have done was 24 miles to Kilmarnock and it was pretty flat ground so I don’t really feel like I have started the challenge yet.

“I think I will get a reality check, however, when I travel to Aberdeen.”

The Jock Stein upper stand season ticket holder continued: “The support from Celtic fans and others has been great. I have donations from all over the UK.

“People have offered to help me with route planning while another chap cycled beside me when I went to Hamilton and Rangers for support.”

David added: “Through my work I come into contact with some vulnerable people that need assistance into employment and other things. The Celtic FC Foundation are great at helping people with that which is why I am doing this.”
