Glasgow has failed to make any real improvements over transport and air quality over the years according to a campaigner.

Colin Howden Director of Transform Scotland told the Transport Summit nothing has changed for the better,

He said on achieving a shift from car use to sustainable transport like buses or walking and cycling the city is at a standstill.

On reducing congestion he said Glasgow was also at a standstill and on tackling harmful emissions the city has gone backwards.

Mr Howden said: “The car remains the dominant mode of transport. Bus and rail costs are increasing and are higher than car user costs.”

He warned there has been no progress in reducing emission form transport in fact the opposite was the case.

He said transport is the largest sector for emissions making up 28% of the total. there has been no progress on climate change reduction form transport.”

MR Howden said the option facing the city were to invest in sustainable transport and advocated measures like workplace parking levy which would also raise cash.

He said road pricing should be looked at too with more park and ride and measures to discourage car use in the centre of the city.

Mr Howden said the Low Emission Zone plans for Glasgow was being approached wrongly.

The first measures to be introduced its to target the worst polluting buses.

Mr Howden said: “Cars, lorries and vans should be the focus initially n ot public transport.
