SCHOOL meals bosses are on the look out for a creative youngster to design a special mascot for Glasgow schools.

A drawing competition, organised by school catering provider Cordia, is calling for pupils to create Fuel Zone’s first mascot.

Across the city, 138 primary schools will put their artistic skills to the test, with prizes up for grabs for the top three designs.

The winning mascot will be made into a full-size costume and used across different Fuel Zone creative materials.

Julia McCreadie, Cordia’s (Services) LLP’s Head of Encore and Facilities Management, came up with the idea to introduce a mascot to Fuel Zones, the name for Glasgow's dining halls.

She said “We are excited to launch a mascot competition for the first time.

“It is a great opportunity for the children to showcase their talents and I really looking forward to seeing their designs come to life.

“Our Fuel Zone meals offer pupils a tasty and healthy lunch and we’re eager to get a mascot which accurately represents this.

"Entries will be featured on the wall at Cordia’s HQ in Blair Court where they can be viewed by staff and visitors.

"We’d like to wish every pupil the very best of luck.”

Pupils will get the chance to create a character under the theme of ‘healthy eating’, which can be anything from growing vegetables to something linked with lunchtimes.

The designs will then be judged by councillor Chris Cunningham, who is City Convener for Education, Skills & Early Years, and chairman of the Cordia Board Ken Andrew, along with Julia.

The winning mascot will be revealed in mid-December.

Fuel Zones, which were introduced across the city in 1999, are the name of the dining rooms in all primary schools where pupils can enjoy a school lunch.

They seek to replicate the High Street offering while creating an attractive service point for children.

Cordia has provided catering services in Glasgow City Council’s 138 primary, 30 secondary and 24 Additional Support and Learning (ASLs) schools since its establishment in 2009.
