A GOVANHILL primary school will benefit from an almost-£2 million makeover.

Glasgow City Council has announced £1.9m for Cuthbertson Primary that will make the building fit for purpose.

Upgrade work on the B-listed building is set to begin later in October and is part of the ongoing 4Rs education estate strategy.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convenor for Education, Skills and Early Years, said: “The investment in Cuthbertson Primary School is great news for pupils, staff and the Govanhill community.

“The City Government is fully committed to creating the best possible learning environment for our children.

“There’s a direct link between learning environment and attainment and the refurbishment at Cuthbertson will provide a substantial lift to everyone connected to the school.

“I look forward to seeing pupils and staff thriving in an enhanced and improved Cuthbertson Primary once all the work has been completed.”

The Edwardian building was finished in 1906 and originally named the Sir John Neilson Cuthbertson School.

Sir John had been chairman of the Glasgow School Board from 1885 to 1903 and the impressive building, designed by architect James Miller, was named in his honour.

All of Cuthbertson Primary School, including the janitor's lodge, playground walls and gatepiers, is listed.

As with many of Glasgow's listed schools, the building needs care and attention to make it fit for modern teaching.

The £1.9m will be spent on new roofing, drainage, stonework and fresh windows.

Inside there will be new toilets and the internal decoration will be spruced up with new flooring to finish the job.

Soryia Siddique, Labour spokeswoman for schools and further education said: "I am delighted that Cuthbertson Primary will be benefitting from the 4Rs programme.

"The 4Rs multimillion investment programme has resulted in improving the learning and teaching environment for many schools in Glasgow.

"I look forward to seeing the benefits of almost £1.9 million for Cuthbertson Primary School and our young learners benefitting from an improved teaching and learning environment."

Over the past 15 years Glasgow City Council has spent more than £609m on schools with 43 new primaries built and four standalone nurseries.

Gowanbank Primary will be the next school to be completed under the five-year 4Rs investment programme.

Broomhill Primary is also under construction, as are Dalmarnock, Blairdardie and Carntyne primaries.

Tower View Nursery, in Gartharmlock was completed late last year while Rowena Nursery, in Knightswood, had its official opening in July last year and Dalmarnock Nursery washanded over in May this year.

A consultation is currently under way regarding a new school for the north of the city, in Maryhill.
