THE ballot for highly sought-after tickets for Glasgow’s Christmas lights switch-on event officially opened at 10am on Monday morning.

Organiser Glasgow Life confirmed a staggering 16,000 free tickets are up for grabs.

Entry to the event on Sunday, November 19 is by ticket only with any unclaimed or returned tickets going to people who have already entered the ballot.

Last year, organisers received 56,995 unique applications requesting 272,830 tickets, meaning George Square could have been filled more than 16 times over.

Just over ten per cent of all applications were duplicates and were removed from the ballot.

Over the years, up to 15 per cent of tickets haven’t been used on the night, so organisers are urging people to only request the exact number of tickets they will need.

A maximum of six can be requested per household, and only one application will be accepted per household.

Ninety-three per cent of tickets will go to Glasgow addresses.

Lovers of all things festive are in for a treat this year as George Square is set to don even more new lights with the ever-popular Christmas market on the bill too.
