Glasgow Airport is ready for one of the busiest periods of the year with tens of thousands of holidaymakers prepare to head off for the October holiday week.

The airport expects more than 170,000 people through the airport over the next four days.

Most are heading to winter sun destinations with Florida and the Canary Islands the most popular.

European city breaks are also popular with flights heading to Valencia, Lisbon, Brussels, Paris and Berlin.

The airport said it has extra staff on hand to help guide passengers, particularly those with young children, through the check-in process.

Francois Bourienne, Glasgow Airport’s commercial director, said: “The October school break is a huge week for us, and follows on from the busiest period in our history when we welcomed more than four million passengers through our doors between June and September.

“This weekend in particular will be very busy and we are expecting to welcome even more passengers than we did during the same period last year.”

The airport advised passengers to arrive in plenty of time to get through check-in and security to be in time for departure.

Later this month new routes will be launched to Madrid and Krakow from Ryanair and a new London Southend service from Flybe and Lufthansa will also launch its new four-per-week service to Munich.
