A man lashed out at a car belonging to his friend causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage when he discovered the pal was sleeping with his ex-girlfriend.

Stephen Collington damaged the Ford Focus which was parked outside his ex’s Lennox Drive home on April 21 this year.

The 27-year-old appeared in the dock at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last Friday for sentencing after causing his ex partner and friend to feel fear or alarm by showing up uninvited and shouting at the pair.

Depute fiscal Craig Wainwright told the court Collington, of Craigs Avenue, and his partner had ended their relationship but had one child together.

He added: “At approximately 1.30am both [the ex and her new partner] were woken by shouting coming from the street.

“They immediately recognised the voice as that of her ex-partner.

“They observed him standing outside shouting up at the window but couldn’t make out what exactly was said.

“They heard smashing and banging and he was observed pick an item out the bin and striking the Ford Focus with the object before throwing it.”

The damage to the vehicle was worth of a total of £300, the court heard.

Collington continued to shout at his ex and his friend before he made off but was later traced by police, reports the Clydebank Post

An initial charge alleged Collington had repeatedly struck the vehicle causing both wing mirrors to break and had removed the wipers from both the front and rear screens but this was reduced to causing “damage to the motor vehicle”.

However, Collington’s defence agent, Angela Mullane, said her client was prepared to repay the cost of the damage that day.

She added: “His best friend was sleeping with the mother of his child and he reacted badly.”

Sheriff Ferguson accepted Collington’s willingness to repay the cost of the damage and admonished him for putting the duo in a state of fear and alarm.
