REVELLERS looking to enjoy the festivities for Guy Fawkes Night are being urged to buy their fireworks from a reputable trader.

That’s the advice from Glasgow City Council’s Trading Standards with bonfire night fast approaching.

The local authority says that anyone who stores or sells fireworks above 5kg must apply for a storage licence.

They are urging anyone who wants to hold November 5 celebrations to buy from a reputable trader who holds such a licence.

Fireworks are now also being offered for sale on a number of social media websites.

Advice from trading standards is if there is any doubt when buying fireworks, you should make sure the product is properly labelled with the standard marking and in English.

Only fireworks that comply with European safety standards, carry the CE mark and are correctly labelled with details of the manufacturer and importer can legally be supplied to people.

Boxes of fireworks must not be split and sold separately. Any firework that exceeds 120 decibels must also not be supplied to people. There is also age restrictions on the sale of fireworks.

Their advice comes as fireworks have become widely available for sale to people in the Glasgow area on popular social media websites including Facebook.

If fireworks are not stored correctly, it can have an impact on the overall safety and performance of them.

Trading Standards said they are aware of fireworks being sold through this method and will investigate any complaint brought to their attention.

Neil Coltart, Group Manager of Trading Standards, said: “We are working with Police Scotland and The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to carry out joint work, emphasising the safety messages and also reminding businesses about the age restriction and storage requirements for fireworks.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that over the past five years around 350 pre-school children, some as young as one years old, were treated in hospital for firework injuries.

The SFRS advise parents to never give sparklers to under-fives. The emergency service also encourages parents to supervise their children carefully during November 5 festivities and to keep them well back from the bonfire and fireworks.

For older children, sparklers should be held away from their body and at arm’s length. Anyone with sparkler should not run or wave them at other people when they are lit.

Children should also wear gloves when holding sparklers and parents should avoid putting loose or flowing clothes on their children which could catch easily.

This year’s November 5 Glasgow Fireworks event will take place at 7.30pm in the city’s Glasgow Green.

The free fireworks display at the city park will also offer festivities for families. The event will open from 5pm and including food and drink stalls. There will also be a funfair.

Admission is free and the display finishes at 9pm.

Trading Standards also said they will investigate all complaints received and you can contact them on their consumer helpline number 03454 040506.
