AN appeal has been launched to track down witnesses of a sexual assault in East Kilbride.

A 22-year-old woman was attacked in the early hours of Saturday October 14 in the Whitehills Terrace area.

Extensive enquiries have been carried out to find the individual responsible for the assault which left the young woman "distraught", including checking CCTV and speaking to local residents.

Officers have found that a number of people were in the vicinity at the time that they are keen to speak to.

Detective Inspector Stevie McMillan of Police Scotland said: "A significant number of enquiries have been carried out in order to identify who is responsible for this attack which has left this young woman distraught.

"We now know that there were a number of people seen in the area who we are keen to trace.

"We understand that there were two men in the area at the time who were in each other's company.

"We believe that these men might have important information which could help with our enquiries, therefore I would ask them to come forward to police."

The men are described as white and in their early 20s.

The first man is said to be around 6ft with a skinny build, wearing a light grey hooded tracksuit top and grey slim fit tracksuit bottoms.

The second had light 'fluffy' stubble, was around 5ft 10 with a skinny build, wearing a black Adidas hooded top with a large white Adidas logo on the chest and three white stripes on the sleeves, light blue skinny jeans and back Vans trainers which had a white sole.

Both males had their hoods up.

Detective Inspector Stevie McMillan added: "This has been a very traumatic incident for the victim and we have been ensuring she is receiving the support she requires at this time.

"We appreciate that residents may be worried, however we would like to reassure members of the community that this is an isolated incident and crimes of this type are thankfully rare.

"We are working to identify the person responsible and are extremely keen to seek the assistance of the public. In the meantime, additional uniformed patrols will continue and anyone who has any information can speak to any local officer or contact 101.

"Information can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111."
