Style & Substance

A 148-room four star hotel in Cumbernauld, the Westerwood sells itself as a leisure and business getaway on the outskirts of Glasgow. The star attractions are its 18-hole golf course, designed by superstar golfer Seve Ballesteros, and its spa which has recently undergone a £500,000 facelift. Guests can choose from a range of facial and body treatments which range in price from around £40 to £80 and use luxury Espa products. The therapists are attentive and the facials in particular will leave your skin glowing.

The only draw back is that the relaxation room, where guests can unwind between treatments, is perhaps just a little to warm to chill out in - although that is probably personal taste. The pool area, which features a large swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and steam also felt a bit overheated, although a cooling dip in the pool helps.

Sleeping Matters

The room was spacious with a large and extremely comfortable bed, and an attractively decorated bathroom. It comes equipped with a kettle, tea and coffee sachets and a selection of biscuits - something which some other hotels seem to be increasingly scrimping on.

Food for Thought

The hotel offers guests a choice of two restaurants for dinner: The Grill, which more laid back, or fine dining at Flemings.

Staff were attentive but not intrusive, and very accommodating to special requests. Flemings is a lovely setting for dinner, but the menu does not leave much choice for non-meat eaters being dominated by dishes such as steak, beef, duck, pork belly, calves liver and chicken. That left only a choice of plaice or aubergine, but after explaining to our waiter that neither of us ate meat he was kind enough to let us order from The Grill menu instead which - although still fairly meat-orientated - also included haddock and chips, salmon, and macaroni cheese.

We shared a goat's cheese salad which came with a generous helping of large goat's cheese cubes, followed by haddock and chips which was again a substantial portion but very tasty with a crispy beer batter. Desert was a warm and gooey sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, which was also delicious.

Drink in the Sights

Guests can sink into large comfortable couches next to an open fire in the Flemings lounge, or enjoy the views over the golf course in the Grill lounge adjacent to the spa which also serves afternoon tea, which you can enjoy in the comfort of your spa robe and slippers. But don't expect a cheap drink: a round of two gin & tonics comes in around £12.

Nice Touch

A selection of tablet pieces, chocolate chip cookies and shortbread were delivered to our room as a welcome present, which was a nice surprise after returning from the spa.

About the Area

The hotel is all about escaping the city, without having to venture to far. It is located a short taxi ride from Cumbernauld railway station. It is a peaceful setting overlooked by the Campsie Hills.

An 'Autumn Spa Break' is available until December 3, and starts at £105pp including meals, spa treatments, Prosecco and chocolates.
