LOCAL support is set to make this year's Moira's Run a racing success.

A team from Santander in Shawlands has pledged to raise £1000 for the event and the bank will double any money its employees raise.

And Allison Street pub Neeson's Bar is also pitching in with a team taking part in the 5K race.

The annual event in Queen's Park is held to raise vital support for The Moira Fund, a charity set up in honour of Moira Jones.

Moira was murdered in the park in 2008 but her family and friends are honouring her memory with the Fund, which supports families of people who have been murdered.

The team of six from Santander includes Paula Greenan, Select Relationship Manager; Gemma Loughery business manager; and Peter Sloan, Branch Manager; all from the Shawlands branch.

They will be joined by Santander colleagues Jade Doherty, Alan Cook and John Penman.

Paul said: "We have been supporting The Moira Fund for a number of years now because this was a local tragedy that happened in our own area and it is important for us to help out.

"This is the second year running we have had a team in the Moira's Run - but it's a first time for me so I'll just have to see how I get on.

"It should be fun and we're looking forward to it."

This year's race is on Sunday, October 29 with the warm up at 10.15am and the starting gun firing at 10.30am.

Hundreds are expected to turn out and take over Queen's Park.

Moira's mum Bea said: "This is always such a great event and although I become quite emotional thinking about it, I do look forward to it, to all those wonderful people who turn up bringing with them the warmth and support of the community and making it such a success.

"I think that the community aspect of it all is emphasised by the involvement of Santander and this is just great, they are encouraging folks to take part by donating a wee bit and then they are doubling it, making every wee bit go further.

"I have reason to believe that we will have the wonderful team from Neeson's Bar with us again too but their fancy dress code is always a closely guarded secret.

"Not long now."
