A man has been struck by a car on the same road where a teenager was killed last week.

The 22-year-old was on the central island of the A749 East Kilbride Road around on 7.45am on Wednesday when he was hit by aPeugeot Partner van travelling southbound.

The man was rushed to Hairmyres Hospital but was later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

His condition has been described as critical.

The female driver was uninjured as a result of the crash but was said to be badly shaken.

The road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators conducted enquiries at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for information following the incident.

Sergeant Alasdair Marshall said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the A749 this morning, in particular motorists, bus drivers and taxi drivers who were on the opposite carriageway.

"If you have any information or any dash cam footage, please do contact us. Your information could assist in the ongoing investigation into establishing the circumstances of this incident.”

The accident comes exactly one week on from the death of Megan Scott on the same stretch of road.

Megan, 15, was struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing on October 18 and later died of her injuries.

The 18-year-old driver was uninjured and inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
