A MULTI-MILLION pound hotel is planned for a site opposite Queen Street Station.

Legal and General wants to demolish the six storey Dale House on West George Street.

The former Royal Bank of Scotland cash handling centre which was built in the early 1980s has been lying vacant for the last 18 years.

Plans lodged with the city council involve flattening it and building a 160 bed hotel with a bar, restaurant and shops.

The report says: "The primary aim of the design is to bring purpose and life back into an unused site in the Glasgow central conservation area, adjacent to great amenities and transport, which has now fallen into a state of visual decline and currently presents a poor image to those arriving for the first time to the city via Queen Street station.

"The site will be repurposed as a 160 bed hotel with retail offering which will contribute to tourism in Glasgow that supports the vibrant cultural and commercial life of the city."

The new venture will be run by Berlin based Meiniger Hotels which operates 18 sites with 8300 bed across 10 European cities.

Legal and General has a long track record of regenerating towns and cities across the UK and has experience in creating unique retail and leisure destinations.

Current major projects include a £240million retail and leisure scheme in Bracknell which is part of one of the largest urban regeneration schemes currently being built in the UK.

The company is also involved in an £85m investment to extend an existing shopping centre in Eastbourne and a £53m investment to acquire and fund the development of a new retail and leisure scheme at the heart of Dover town centre.

Work has started on the £120m redevelopment of Queen Street station which will see redundant buildings opposite George Square being demolished.

The project, which is due for completion in 2020 will give passengers an expanded concourse with increased capacity and circulation space, improved customer facilities and a contemporary and distinctive building both internally and externally.
