A MAN who threatened to "smash" police officers has been jailed for his bad behaviour.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, James Irwin pleaded guilty to entering an insecure motor in Kennishead Avenue with intent to steal on October 4, 2017.

The 42-year-old also admitted forcing open a lockfast vehicle with intent to steal on the same street.

In addition, Irwin pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening manner by shouting, swearing and uttering threats of violence within a police vehicle between Kennishead Avenue and Helen Street Police Office after being arrested on the same date.

The fiscal depute told the court that the accused was spotted on CCTV approaching cars at around 8.50pm.

The police attended at the car park at around 9.10pm and found the accused leaning into the smashed car window of a Toyota in an attempt to steal. Officers noted that Irwin, of Keppochhill Road, had glass on the sleeves of his jacket.

His speech was slurred and he appeared under the influence. He was then arrested, placed in handcuffs and put in the police van.

En route to Helen Street Police Office, Irwin told the officers to "f**k off" and threatened: "I'll smash the two of you when these come off."

When the CCTV was properly viewed later, the accused was seen approaching a number of vehicles before picking up a stone to smash the window of the Toyota.

In defence, Irwin was found to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

When admitted to Barlinnie, both valium and methadone was found in his system.

The defence agent stated that Irwin did not take valium willingly – claiming the accused's position was that his drink must have been spiked.

Irwin's partner, who was at court in support, was allegedly concerned with his behaviour at the time of the incident and was upset that he has committed further crimes.

The sheriff stated that the only appropriate sentence was custody and jailed Irwin for 60 days, backdated to October 5.
