A NEW plan which will result in more than £1billion being spent on building 10,000 affordable homes will go before city councillors this week.

The investment scheme for the next five years would result in the city council contributing £600million with a similar amount coming from private firms.

Glasgow’s housing investment plan aims to promote regeneration through new-build housing and to manage, maintain and improve existing housing.

It also sets out to raise management standards in the private sector, tackle fuel poverty, energy efficiency and climate change, improve access to housing and promote health and wellbeing.

The plan also identifies a number of principles for housing investment including design quality, community benefits and tackling homelessness.

Kenny McLean, the city council’s convener for neighbourhoods, housing and public realm, said: “The council is committed to making sure people in Glasgow have access to affordable housing.

“A five year plan such as this allows the council and our housing partners in the public and private sectors to plan ahead.”

A report to councillors says the scheme will result in the use of brownfield sites and the new homes will be highly energy efficient.

It adds: “The new housing delivered via the strategic housing investment plan will contribute to the continuing regeneration of Glasgow’s neighbourhoods.

“It will facilitate significant investment in the construction industry with additional associated benefits in the form of jobs and training opportunities and benefits to small and medium enterprises.”

If the plan is backed by councillors on Thursday, it will be submitted to the Scottish Executive for approval.
