AN UNLICENSED driver who got behind the wheel ran away after smashing into a wall.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Kieran McCartney pleaded guilty to driving along Springburn Road and elsewhere in the city without a valid UK licence or insurance on March 12 this year.

The 22-year-old also admitted driving dangerously and at excessive speed in Glendale Drive and Kincardine Drive, Bishopbriggs, causing the car to collide with a wall. Following the incident, the accused failed to stop and leave his details.

The court was told that it was around 2am when police were called to the scene. The crashed car was found with its airbags deployed and key still in the ignition.

McCartney was nowhere to be found, however he was earlier recorded on CCTV driving through a petrol station.

For failing to have the proper paperwork in place, the accused, of Westergreens Avenue in Kirkintilloch, was admonished but had his licence endorsed.

For driving dangerously, crashing the car and failing to leave his details, McCartney was sentenced to a Community Payback Order with 12 months’ supervision and 120 hours of unpaid work to be completed within four months. He was also disqualified from driving for a year and must sit the extended test to get his licence back.
