A HUGE temporary swimming pool will be installed at Scotstoun for synchronised swimmers taking part in a new European sporting event.

The pool, which will measure 25metres long and 20metres wide and hold 330,000 gallons of water will be erected at Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Around 750 spectators will be able to see teams perform technically demanding routines choreographed to music between Friday August 3 and Tuesday September 7.

The competition will be one of the highlights of the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow which will also host cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and the triathlon.

Germany's capital city Berlin will host the athletics championships, the diving event will take place in Edinburgh and the open water swimming competition at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Glasgow 2018 championships director Colin Hartley said: "The synchronised swimming competition will be a show stopper with Europe's very best synchronised swimmers going for gold in a breathtaking temporary facility at Scotstoun Sports Campus.

"Scotstoun is synonymous with major sporting events but this is the first time it will host synchronised swimming.

"There is no doubt the event will be one of the highlights of the sporting competition schedule and those who attend will witness an incredible showcase of athletic power and artistry."

Scotstoun has a track record of hosing sporting events including international athletics, rugby sevens, badminton championships and the table tennis and squash competitions of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Next year will be the first time the venue has hosted an international synchronised swimming competition further enhancing the city's reputation as a world leading sports city.

Synchronised swimming first featured at the European Athletics Championships in 1974 when Great Britain took gold in all three events.

Around 3,000 athletes will travel to Scotland for the 2018 European Championships as part of a total delegation of around 8,500 including officials, media and others.
