A PROTEST group has been set up to highlight the "horrific impact" that the recent rise in mural designs across Glasgow has on the city.

The Society for Covering Up Murals also aims to name and shame the people who create them.

Many of the dramatic artworks across Glasgow have been commissioned by the city council to brighten up areas blighted by graffiti and vandalism.

And many have now become popular attractions for both visitors to the city and locals.

Glasgow even has its own City Centre Mural Trail, all contained in one easy walking route, which includes work such as The World's Most Economical Taxi, The Barras Pirate and Billy Connolly artwork.

Despite the popularity of these works, Society for Covering Up Murals have branded some of the murals across Glasgow as "indecent images" that they hope to eradicate.

However the group have praised some work in the city including the historical mural on Saracen Street.

The group described it as "knowing its place" and that it "wasn't just banged up to falsify a non-existent cultural movement."

Society for Covering Up Murals have also flagged other 'unofficial' murals that they "loved" that were painted over.

The group posted on Facebook: "Our current main aim is to have some of the really bad ones around Glasgow disappear.

"We've been told that if we don't like the murals then we shouldn't look - but it's actually really hard to move through the city with our eyes closed and we're worried about the health and safety ramifications."
